What other sneaker spots could learn from a quick visit to Burn Rubber

A month ago a random trip was made up all the way to Detroit, Michigan. The visit to Burn Rubber was completely necessary. I’ve been to a fair share of small sneaker shops, boutiques, many times disappointed with lack of gratitude for stopping through or even checking to see if we could use some help. Very much the opposite this time, AZ the shop manager wanted to know what I thought about their new webshow Detorit Rubber, had lots to say about the choice topic of custom sneakers, local sneaker customizer El Cappy…and customs of years past.

A past stop by RAYGUN in DES MOINES, IOWA

A visit to Des Moines’ own, Raygun. Self everything t-shirt and random gifts line from the ideas to the printing to the selling. All the designs have a heavy sarcastic Midwest theme, especially of the Iowa variety. KC was well represented. According to an interview I read recently with their owner, Mike Draper, Kansas City is where they are looking to open up shop next.

Genius idea, was a must buy. Sad we didn’t think of it.

For the ladies, of course. Rolls right off the tongue.

Refreshing to see a simple well thought out and branded establishment. Everything from the ideas to the nice staff was welcoming. The receipt return policy was hilarious. But my favorite thing may be their #overheardinthestore hashtag on Twitter that is often updated:

“i’m so mad my wife’s hot ass didn’t make it on the chive. we send them pics of it every other week” #overheardinthestore #chiveon

Staying the night in the legendary Palmer House, this is their lobby.

This was their room bathroom. (Well technically this was an extra one we unlocked with a credit card.)

A pizza chain…I figured it wouldn’t be as good as my last trip over the summer at Giordano’s, nor as long a wait. But sounding like Illuminati was attractive enough.

Def not as deep as Giordano’s but damn butter crust was good(but apparently not enough to take a shot of). Next time must find a hole-in-the-wall pizza spot.

At the recently redesigned original Niketown. Jordan Brand numbered collection display that would make any person into sneakers envious.

Just let us get these 11s. WREDs, not BREDs.

Yet for many people average is just fine. If that is you…keep it up.

Stumbled across a spot I had wanted to check out, the original Billy Goat Tavern at 430 N. Michigan Ave at Lower Level. Known to have inspired the classic Saturday Night Live skit with John Belushi and Bill Murray titled The Olympia Restaurant.

Best restroom signs, ever.

An ice cold night finished off with warming hot tacos and a spicy pineapple-jalapeño margarita at de cero taqueria at 814 West Randolph Street.
